About Dr Ståle Rygh
Dr Ståle Rygh
I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and HCPC registered practitioner with over 20 years’ experience working across NHS, community and independent mental health services.
I completed my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Exeter and have worked extensively with adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, relationship difficulties and complex psychological presentations.
My approach combines clinical expertise with warmth, curiosity and compassion. I aim to provide a thoughtful and grounded therapeutic environment where people feel safe enough to reflect openly, better understand themselves, and move towards meaningful change.
Alongside private practice, I have held senior clinical roles within NHS psychological services and have extensive experience working with trauma and high-risk presentations in community mental health settings. This has included supporting people following adverse life experiences, abuse, neglect, loss, workplace trauma and complex relational difficulties.
I integrate a range of evidence based psychological approaches depending on individual needs, including trauma focused therapy, EMDR, cognitive behavioural approaches, compassion focused work and relational therapy.
In addition to clinical practice, I provide training and consultation for organisations and professionals working in emotionally demanding roles. I am co-founder and co-director of Real Life Psychology, which delivers trauma informed training, reflective practice and psychologically informed resources to healthcare, social care and third-sector organisations.
I am also co-author of Train Your Brain: A Model to Help Understand and Regulate Emotions (Rygh & Morgan, 2025), a psychologically informed resource designed to support emotional understanding, resilience and self-regulation.
Relationships can be a significant source of both hurt and healing, and I believe focusing on developing a good relationship with our self and people around us is key to good mental health.
A particular interest of mine is trauma and I have extensive training in various trauma informed models (including Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy etc) to help people recover from the various ways trauma affects us.
I aim to offer a therapeutic relationship where you feel safe to explore challenges you face without fear of judgement, and feel heard, understood, supported, held and guided. I hope this in turn can help you turn towards your own difficulties with empathy, patience and kindness so in time you can be your own healer.
I also hope our therapeutic journey will eventually help you develop deeper and more meaningful relationships with friends, family, colleagues intimate partners and life more broadly.
I am the co-founder and director of Real Life Psychology, a Community Interest Company aimed at supporting clients with complex lives and a history of homelessness, addictions and significant mental health problems. Real Life Psychology also offers trauma informed training and reflective practice to skill up and support staff working in this sector across the South West of England. www.reallifepsychology.org
I am registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and adhere by their codes of conduct, ethics and requirements for ongoing supervision and continuing knowledge and skills development.
